A lovely little town set up in the hills to the north east of Lago (Lake) Trasimeno, Castel Rigone is a splendid base from which to explore this part of Umbria. The medieval village (it's little more than that) has a lovely centre and great views down into the valley, with the lake in the distance. Near neighbours include Passignano sul Trasimeno, down on the northern lakeside, and Magione to the south. The provincial capital of Perugia lies some 25km to the south east. There's lots to do on Lake Trasimeno of course, with boat trips out onto the waters and good hiking around its banks. You are also close to the border with Tuscany here, so you have two of Italy's most beautiful regions to choose from. Umbria has delights aplenty, including Assisi with its stunning cathedral. Check out too the very pretty Valle di Spoleto, with Spello, Trevi, Bevagna and Montefalco. And there is of course the Monti Sibillini national park.
