Relais San Lorenzo, Lucca
Relais San Lorenzo, Lucca - lying on Via Cesare Battisti, right in the historic centre of this lovely Tuscan town, this Lucca hotel is the ideal base from which to explore. Hotels within the walls of Lucca are at a premium of course, and this delightful three-star accommodation is very close to the main shopping street of the Via Filungo and to the Church of San Frediano. A very nice Lucca hotel constructed within a 15th century palazzo, it offers the superb edifice of an historic building ... concealing all the comforts of a modern hotel.
This Lucca hotel has a selection of double rooms, all with air conditioning, bathroom with shower and toilet, and a television. The front desk can arrange car hire (though as Lucca is largely pedestrianised these days, the best way to see its winding medieval streets is unarguably on foot or atop a bike), and a buffet breakfast is served each morning. Rolls eaten and strong Italian coffee imbibed, you'll want to head out to see the sights. But where do you start?
Well taking the steps up to the top of the 16th century defensive walls is a good start. These massive ramparts (you have to pass through tunnels beneath them to enter the town) are nowadays topped by parks and pathways (popular with runners, walkers and cyclists), and the 4km circuit, entirely unbroken, is a great way to see the town and the countryside around. The Lucchese are immensely proud and fond of their walls, and you'll soon know why.
