Residenza Antica Canonica, Citta Di Castello
Via San Florido 23, Citta di CastelloResidenza Antica Canonica, Citta Di Castello: this marvellous hotel is set within a fifteenth century building in the old town of Citta di Castello, right next to the Cathedral. The canons of the duomo once lived here, and the subsequent renovation has carefully retained the historical authenticity of this splendid structure. Inside, doorways are constructed in Pietra Serena local stone, with decorated ceilings and an important sixteenth century fresco depicting the Crucifixion by Raphael. Suites and apartments are furnished with old-style pieces in solid wood. Each has a kitchen/ette and many have exposed beams - both charming and practical. There are apartments for up to six, plus family accommodation.
Something of an overlooked gem, Citta di Castello probably suffers from the competition - Umbria does have a disproportionately large number of beautiful medieval towns to visit. This one is a minor gem though, not least for its trio of excellent museums. Among them, the Pinacoteca and the Museo del Duomo and the Collezione Tessile di Tele Umbra have superb works by Raphael, Signorelli, Lorenzetti and Ghirlandaio (and many more). The Collezione Tessile di Tele Umbra, meanwhile, is dedicated to keeping the local tradition of linen making alive and is joined to a working textile factory. Other sights include the Duomo (a cathedral so reworked during the 18th century that it is stretching things to still call it a medieval building).
From this Citta di Castello hotel you can head out to explore Umbria - a stunningly lovely region often referred to as the 'green heart of Italy', and with treasures including Assisi, Gubbio and the Valle di Spoleto.
