The Leaning Tower of Pisa is, of course, an essential visit on any visit to this magnificent medieval Tuscan city. But the lopsided tower is just one of many gems in the historic centre of town. Its neighbours on the so-called Campo dei Miracoli (the field of miracles, perhaps the finest agglomeration of medieval architecture still in existence in any European town) include the white and grey stone Duomo (the Cathedral), the Baptistery and the Camposanto. Heading out from the wide open space of the Campo, which is effectively the Cathedral Square, you find a dozen or more important medieval churches and palazzi.
Pisa rose from being a Roman town to its imperial height between the 11th and 13th centuries. After this it was eclipsed on the field of battle and in economic success by its neighbours. But if Florence and Genoa ruled the Renaissance, Pisa is a magnificent slice of the medieval period. And despite bombing during World War II, this lovely Tuscan city centre remains largely unscathed. This is a Pisa hotel offering contemporary comforts just out of the city centre.
