The busiest and biggest town on the island, it is a bustling port, with its heart the tangle of ancient streets of the Castello district. And Cagliari has one of Italy's biggest fish markets - the catch hauled daily from the waters of the Mediterranean means this lovely Sardinian city is a great place to eat.

Above it all sits the castle from which Cagliari takes its Sardinian language name 'Casteddu'. Surrounding the town are the ancient defensive walls, with the two massive Pisan towers, all carved from the gleaming white limestone that gives Cagliari such a dramatic appearance. Within are the archaeological museum, the cathedral, and a clutch of Roman remains, including the amphitheatre (still in use for concerts).
