Paestum itself was an important Greco-Roman city dating from around the seventh century BC, which was rediscovered during the 18th century (following the uncovering of nearby Pompeii and Herculaneum). The site has three Doric temples (dedicated to Apollo, Athena and Hera). There are also tombs with painted walls, an extraordinary survival from the Classical period. As well as historic Paestum, you have sandy beaches just a kilometre or so away - and this part of the Campania coast is pleasantly uncrowded. Just south is the Cilento national park.
