Tangohotel, Lucca
Tangohotel, Lucca - located outside of the famous Renaissance defensive walls, this Lucca hotel is a superbly restored 18th century edifice. Lucca's Tangohotel sits on the Via Della Formica (the site of the now disappeared Formica River) south of the city centre, which can be reached on foot in just a few minutes. The railway station is on this side of town and is also within easy reach.
The owners of this Lucca hotel have done a really nice job of restoration - this is the sort of thing that Italians do extremely well. The Tangohotel is an artful yet seamless reconstruction, incorporating the fabric and traditions of the original house, with stone walls, roof beams, original terraces and skylights. The interior decor has been beautifully done, with each room emerging as a unique creation. All rooms have en suite bathrooms, each is in a different colour. Rooms go from double to quadruple, all with radio, minibar, air conditioning and television. You can opt for B&B or head into town to take your breakfast (our preferred choice as there are some terrific cafes and bars in downtown Lucca).
And once in town there is much to see. The city walls are great for walking, cycling or a morning jog - from the intact 4km circuit you get a great vantage point down into the medieval and Roman city below, or indeed out to the hills and mountains of rural Tuscany.
