Lying some 20km west of Ravenna and the Italian Adriatic coast, the Emilia-Romagna town of Lugo is in Ravenna province, an historic little city which appears first as 'Lucus' around the seventh century AD. There are a number of historic sights, notably the Rocca Estense, one of the many Este fortresses which pepper the region - the Dukes of Este ruled much of northern Italy during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. See too the Oratorio of Croce Coperta, with its 15th century frescoes, and the Collegiata church: rebuilt in the 18th century over a 13th century Franciscan edifice, it has a marvellous 15th century cloister. The modern church of San Francesco di Paola (1890) meanwhile, has a superb polychrome terracotta sculpture of the crucified Christ (15th century). Lugo is also famed as the birthplace of the great Gioachino Rossini. The beaches of the Italian Adriatic coast are within easy reach of your Lugo hotel, and the marvellous city of Bologna lies around 40km west of here.
