Tonnara di Bonagia Hotel, Trapani
Housed in a converted 17th century cannery, this Trapani hotel is set in a historic estate with outstanding facilities and a unique maritime past. Guests stay in well-appointed suites with complimentary bathrobes, DVD players and coffee machines, often with views over the Mediterranean from this lovely part of Sicily. A large 'eternity' pool is available for guests as well as a diving centre, bowling green and tennis courts. The hotel restaurant is in a vaulted barn and serves up a selection of local specialities.
The hotel was once home to Trapani's tuna fishermen and accordingly the estate has a large museum telling the story of how this small Sicilian town became famous for its tuna, complete with antique equipment and recordings of local fishing songs. Every May and June, the estate celebrates the ancient tradition of the 'Mattanza', a ritual mass catch of tuna that culminates in a festival dinner. If you're staying a few days you shouldn't miss a trip to Trapani itself, once a magnet for African merchants and still a great place to do some shopping, whether you're looking for antiques or fashionable clothes.
If you're in town on a business trip, this hotel in Trapani has a range of conference facilities including audiovisual equipment, computer hire and business support services. A large cocktail bar and cafe are on site for post-conference drinks or more relaxed meetings. There is free parking, a 24-hour front desk and a concierge available with information about the hotel and local activities and tours. All credit cards are accepted.
